He was a creeler (cotton) [1911] / working in a cotton mill at Dean Clough Mills.

During World War I, he enlisted [1915] and served as a Gunner with the Royal Navy.

He was killed in action [31st May 1916] (aged 19), when HMS Indefatigable was sunk in the Battle of Jutland.

In February 1916, he had gone home on leave, taking with him a young shipmate, Gunner William J. Mudge, an orphan from Devonport. Gunner Mudge also lost his life.

They are remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial [12].

Arthur is also remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Stannary Congregational Church, Halifax, and on the Memorial at Crossley's Carpets

In 1851, he obtained a patent for his dyeing apparatus.

He saw the industrial potential of Brookfoot with its constant supply of water offered by the Red Beck.

In 1870, he founded the Brookfoot Dye Works with partners Mr Thompson and Samuel Naylor, and with his own son as manager.

He was a master dyer employing 133 men and 17 boys [1881].

In 1894, the business was sold to Mr Hannam and it became Thornton, Hannam & Marshall.

On 15th February 1853, he married Ellen Richardson.

Born near Brookfoot Mill [10th March 1804]; baptised at Southowram [13th April 1804].

He was orphaned at the age of 10 and went to live with his uncle Samuel Freeman.

He was a weaver / day labourer / waggon driver.

He was self-educated.

He became interested in nature, natural philosophy, science and astronomy. He studied under Michael Faraday.

Around 1830, he had an Observatory built at High Field, Southowram.

He gave lectures on optics, geology, astronomy, electricity, and other scientific topics. The Brontë family attended his lectures in Haworth.

He made steam gauges, thermometers, barometers and optical instruments, and his work was in demand over all the country.

He established William Richardson & Son.

He was a friend of William Cobbett.

He had an extensive collection of fossils from the carboniferous formations which was representative of the strata of the neighbourhood and included some unique specimens.

On 23rd August 1865, a special meeting of the Bradford Philosophical Society considered purchasing the collection. Mr Parker of Manchester valued the collection on behalf of the society at £350. The society decided to make the purchase.

He was noted for his memory skills, and was able to recite passages of Shakespeare and other authors instantly.

He married Ellen [1802-1867].
