He ran Bridge Royd Mill for a time, and acquired Knowlwood Mill in Walsden [1840].

In 1851, his workers went on strike over pay cuts and the tyranny of their employer.

A poem was written about him:


He is a tyrant — that is true!
But he was once as poor as you.
He went about a selling print;
But now his heart is hard as flint.
Be firm, and then we're not too poor
To send the tyrant back to Shore.

He married (1) Margaret (Peggy) Greenwood [1793-1847].

He was knighted in 1938.

On 19th June 1901, he married Alice Hoyle.

They had no children.

On his retirement from Mytholmroyd Urban District Council in 1921, he presented Mytholmroyd drinking fountain to the town.

To celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1951, the couple gave £1 to more than 900 pensioners aged 70 or over who were living in the Hebden Royd and Hepton districts.

He died the day after his 86th birthday.

During World War I, he enlisted in Halifax and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).

He was killed in action [26th October 1917] (aged 30).

He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium [Grave Ref 106-108], and in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance

He died on 12th May 1867. Probate was granted to his brother John Robertshaw
