On Wednesday 11th June 1902, the newspapers reported

At Halifax County Court yesterday, Mrs Louisa Robinson of Caddy Field, Halifax, applied to Judge
John Heaton Cadman to assign a solicitor and council for proceedings which she intended to bring against the Halifax Board of Guardians, because she wishes to sue in forma pauperis.

His Honour pointed out that she had not complied with the rules of the court because she had not proved by affidavit she was not worth £25.

Applicant:

I am not worth one pound

His Honour:

That might be, but the necessary papers must be produced

and he had read a statement from Mr T. P. Perks, barrister, and perused correspondence from Mrs Robinson and she had absolutely no cause of action.

She complained that Mr Perks had not investigated into her case and she could not get legal assistance.

As the woman came to court in a cab, His Honour paid the fare, and Mr Rhodes, a solicitor in court promised her legal assistance
