He died 18th February 1940 when his ship was torpedoed by German Submarine U-23 and sank off Caithness with the loss of 157 of her crew of 162.

He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, England [Grave Ref 36 1], and in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

He was a member of Elland Boys' Brigade.

During World War I, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant / Sergeant-Observer with the 49th Squadron Royal Air Force.

He was killed instantly in a flying accident at Marquion, when the engine of his aircraft failed [24th November 1918] (aged 18). His pilot Lieutenant Waddington suffered burns & injuries, and died some hours later.

The Halifax Courier [7th December 1918] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Cambrai East Military Cemetery, France [Grave Ref III A 66].

He is remembered on the family grave at Elland Cemetery, on Elland War Memorial, on Ripponden War Memorial, on the Memorial at Stones Wesleyan Methodist Church, Ripponden, on the Memorial at Elland Boys' Brigade, and on the Memorial at Elland Wesleyan Chapel

He was a member of J. Riley & Sons. The business was dissolved on 1st February 1898 by mutual consent as regards Charles Edwards Riley Subsequent censuses show that Charles worked as an employee elsewhere even though his 3 brothers continued in business together.

On 27th September 1888, he married Sarah Whiteley at Halifax Parish Church.


Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Whiteley, a dentist

He was a life-long member of the Central Methodist Church, Brighouse.

He took over the family business, G. S. Whiteley & Company at Ogden Lane Forge, Rastrick.

After his father's death, Clifford formed G. S. Whiteley (Brighouse) Limited.

Clifford made the present weather vane at St Matthew's Church, Rastrick [2007], also produced other wrought iron work for the Central Methodist Church, Brighouse,

He wrote a history of the business in a book entitled A Village Blacksmith.

When he retired in 1986, the business passed on to his nephew, John. The forge closed in 1995.

Clifford died in 2017.

Champion Murgatroyd, the miller at Brearley Corn Mill, had suffered several thefts of sacks of flour. To solve the problem, he placed marked pieces of paper in the flour. The culprits were caught when flour in their possession was sieved. In 1834, John Mitchell, William Mitchell and Abraham Akroyd were charged with stealing 20 lbs of wheat from Champion Murgatroyd. Riley was charged with receiving the stolen wheat. All the men were transported to the West Indies for 7 years

During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He went to France [April 1916]. He was twice wounded.

He was killed in action while leading his men into action in a failed attack on Schwaben Redoubt [3rd September 1916] (aged 22).

The Halifax Courier [9th September 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France [Grave Ref 6A & 6B], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Jude's Church, Savile Park, on the Memorial at All Saints' Church, Dudwell, and on the Memorial at Halifax Golf Club, Ogden

In 1863, he exhibited at the Paris International Dog Show, and his retrievers gained the first and second prizes.

In March 1863, Napoleon III ordered two black, curly-coated retriever pups from Mr Riley for delivery to the Tuileries in Paris.

In July 1863, he won prizes with his dogs at an exhibition in Hamburg: Royal took 1st prize, plus £5 for best dog in the sporting class; In the bitch class, Bess won 1st prize, Nell won 2nd, and June won 3rd.

In [Q1] 1859, he married Emma Marvell [1838-1905] in Halifax.

Born John Riley, son of Mary Wheelwright and George Riley.

The rules of the family's Wheelwright Charity specified that one of the trustees of the charity who succeeded Wheelwright should be his male heir, or, at least, someone with the surname Wheelwright.

This was resolved in the 1750s, when John Wheelwright and George Riley petitioned the House of Lords to change John Riley's name to John Wheelwright to succeed his grandfather as a trustee of the Charity.

He died 10th February 1814 (aged 79).

He was a worsted manufacturer and merchant with a warehouse at Square,  Halifax [1841], a Magistrate for West Riding County of York [May 1851], and a merchant & manufacturer of stuff [1851]

He ran a coach service between Halifax & Hebden Bridge before bringing the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway into the valley. He became a railway pioneer – making his fortune by investing in the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway – before becoming a ship owner, exporting corn to the United States.

At the time of his death, he was acting Director of Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and senior partner in the firm of John Riley & Son, Merchants.

In 1805, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Hargreaves [1784-1860].

The Riley family were devout Christians and were important Methodists in the area. An upstairs room at Brearley House was used as the family chapel. The family later built a small chapel in Brearley which lay below the house. This became too small and was converted to a house, and a larger chapel was built

which can still be seen today on the other side of the river beyond the school playing fields

He was a tailor apprentice [1851] / a tailor and woollen draper [1858].

At the West Riding Spring Assizes [3rd April 1854], a Jubal Riley was charged with

larceny by a servant

and sentenced to 4 months' imprisonment.

He was declared bankrupt [25th February 1858].

In July 1862, Jubal was charged with receiving

cloth in a cut and unmade up state

which he had bought from James Ryan, a journeyman tailor, who had embezzled the cloth from his employer Henry Blakeley, clothier. In August 1862, Jubal and Ryan were found not guilty.

By 1871, he had established a business at 35 Woolshops in Halifax and later expanded to 35-37 Woolshops. At some time his four sons – Charles, Henry, Rowland, Louis – joined the firm, which became known as J. Riley & Sons.

On 14th June 1863, two boys were baptised at Coley Church:

Their parents were named as Jubal and Susannah Riley of Northowram. On the baptism record, Jubal's name and occupation (Tailor) were crossed out and Spinster added for Susannah. Ernest later gave his father's name as Jubal Riley, a tailor.

During World War I, he enlisted [November 1915] and served as a Sergeant with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was reported missing and assumed to have died at Bullecourt when an attack failed and wounded men were left in no-man's land [3rd May 1917] (aged 26).

The Halifax Courier [19th May 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered on the Arras Memorial, France [Grave Ref 6], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Paul's Church, King Cross, and at King Cross Cemetery

He was a member of Range Bank Sunday School / a member of the Square Congregational Church, Halifax Boys' Brigade  / a part-time tailor's errand boy [1911] / a motor driver for Clayton, Murgatroyd & Company Limited, Wade  Street, Halifax / a warehouseman [1917].

He lived at Lucy Street, New Bank, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted at Halifax [June 1917] and served as a Private with the 1st/6th Battalion Notts & Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment.

He went to France [January 1918].

He was killed in action [24th September 1918] (aged 20).

His photograph appears with reports of his death in the Halifax Courier [12th October, 19th October & 26th October 1918].

He was buried at Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref I J 2].

He is remembered at Stoney Royd Cemetery, and in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.
