A waggoner of Southowram.

On 7th July 1877, he was fined 5/- plus 9/6d costs, for causing a nuisance in New Bank, by allowing the brakes of his waggon to make a greater noise than was necessary.

This was the first such case, the Halifax Watch Committee, on account of complaints, having recently determined to put down the screeching noise caused by brakes

Living with them [in 1861] were granddaughter Harriet Rushton [b Hipperholme 1850] (worsted spinner)  & niece Harriet Hirst [b Ovenden 1849] (worsted spinner).

George Rushton died 12th July 1865 (aged 49)  and was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 3817] with Harriet's parents

Mr Hope.

In 1881, she was a housemaid, living at 7 Bank Lane, Brixham, Totnes, Devon, with her widowed mother Fanny Hope

He was a house painter living with his uncle Thomas Rushton [1901,  1911, 1914] / a territorial associated with the Territorial Army at Arden Road.

In [Q3] 1914, he married Mary Ellen Rushton at St Paul's Church, King Cross.


Mary Ellen was his cousin, and daughter of his uncle Thomas Rushton

During World War I, he was called-up [1914] and served as a Sergeant with C Battery 246th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

He was killed in action [13th October 1918] (aged 38).

The Halifax Courier [26th October 1918] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Auberchicourt British Cemetery, France [Grave Ref II C 1].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at Saint Paul's Church, King Cross.

Born in Leeds [4th September 1916].

He was educated at Belle Vue Grammar School, Bradford / employed by Eagle Star Insurance, Halifax / employed by Provincial Insurance, Huddersfield.

In [Q3] 1941, he married Irene Margaret Varley in Calder District.


Irene Margaret was the daughter of
Edgar Varley
 

They lived at West View, 13 Pye Nest Road, Halifax.

During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment.

He trained at Sandhurst.

He served in India, Persia, North Africa & Sicily. He was wounded in Sicily and died in hospital [21st April 1944] (aged 27).

He died in Pinderfields Emergency Hospital, Wakefield [21st April 1944], though some reports wrongly say that he died in Egypt.

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £120 16/6d.

Administration was granted to his widow Irene Margaret.

He was buried at Warley Congregational Church [Grave Ref: O 64].

In [Q2] 1960, Irene Margaret married Leslie W. Gibson in Calder District.

She died 31st October 2006.

She is remembered at Warley Congregational Church

On 9th May 1836, he married Sarah Sutcliffe [1804-1870] in Halifax.

When he failed to support his family, he was sent to prison and Sarah was sent to the Halifax Union Workhouse, where she died [26th March 1870] (aged 66).

She was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 3577], the same plot as Zimri's father
