General Notes

The village of Southowram is a district of Calderdale immediately to the east of Halifax.

In old documents, the Southowram township included

• Ashday
• Backhall
• Bank Bottom
• Blaithroyd
• Caddy Field
• Cinder Hills
• Exley
• Shibden Hall
• Shibden
• Siddal
• Stoney Royd

The township appears as

• Overe and Oure [Domesday Book] where it was described  as wasteas est
• Sudhouerum [1275]
• Ourum, Southouerton, and South-Ourom [13th  and 14th centuries]

The name uses the element owram and means on the south bank, slope or ridge – of the Red Beck – as distinct from Northowram

It was a part of the Honour of Pontefract.

In 1865, the district was included in the extended Halifax Borough.

On 25th December 1866, Southowram was lighted with gas for the first time.

Because of the village's resources – stone, clay and coal – there have been several plans and proposals to link Southowram with the rest of the world (and Halifax), including

• A Beacon Hill rack-and-pinion railway
• A railway from Siddal
• A railway to Elland [1901]
• The Southowram-Holmfield Light Railway [1901, 1905]
• The Halifax to Beacon Hill cable car proposal [2005]

but all came to naught
