Stansfield
Stansfield township lies above Todmorden and covers
the area from Lancashire (in the west) to Heptonstall
township (in the east).
It is bounded in the south and the west by the River Calder.
It meets the Lancashire boundary at Cliviger.
For administrative purposes, it was divided into three parts:
Upper Stansfield, Middle Stansfield and Lower
Stansfield.
The name appears in Domesday Book as Stanesfelt, and is
later spelled as
Stanesfelde,
Stanesfeld,
and
Stansfeld.
The name probably means stony field although others have
indicated that some forms suggest the meaning Stan's field
