Thomas Sugden & Son Limited

Flour millers and maltsters of Brighouse.

The company was founded in 1829 by Thomas Sugden at Brookfoot, and then at the Perseverance Mill which he bought from Thomas Richard Sutcliffe

Around 1842, Sugden was joined by his son, David Goldthorp, and then by Richard.

Thomas retired in 1861.

They were at Perseverance Mill, Brighouse, Upper Mill, Brighouse, and Shore Foot Mills, Huddersfield.

On 13th January 1862, the partnership – then listed with partners Thomas Sugden, David Goldthorp Sugden, and William Sugden - was dissolved (by mutual consent).

David died in a fall in 1871. Richard carried on a Managing Director.

In 1891, the business expanded into Brighouse Mills in Mill Royd Street, and two further sites in Huddersfield.

In 4th March 1892, there was a dispute in the corn-milling trade.

At one time, the mill was producing one 20-stone bag of flour per minute. In 1895, they employed about 100 workers.

Their branded products included

Flavella

a breakfast cereal.

Fire destroyed the original water-powered mill on the night of 14th August 1895 when the Neptune fire engine was unable to cope. A new mill was built the following year.

The distinctive silos for the storage of wheat, visible as you approach Brighouse, were built one in 1959, and one in 1963. In July 1961, a further 20 ft high storey was added to the main mill.

The company was bought by Allied Mills Limited in 1962 and George Frederick Sugden became managing director.

There was a serious fire in the grain warehouse [9th October 1963.]

In February 1964, the business was one of 30 mills bought by Garfield Weston's Associated British Foods.

The company closed in October 1997.

In 2001, plans were made to demolish the silos and convert the site into retail stores, with a new swimming pool for Brighouse and a replacement for Anchor Bridge over the canal. The implementation of the plans seems an interminable debate with firmly-entrenched and opposing stances between Calderdale Council and the developers
