The examination of Betty Walton of the township of Heptonstall a Singlewoman taken upon oath the 5th day of November 1807 before us, two of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace, that about 9 weeks ago was delivered of a male child now living and chargeable to the township of Heptonstall.

And further that the child was begotten on her body by Henry Sunderland of Heptonstall and Henry Sunderland is the only true natural father of the said child

On 18th September 1828, he (and five others) were received aboard the Hulk prison ship Retribution moored at Woolwich.

A report by the gaoler on the Retribution said the conduct/behaviour of all six was

very bad

He went to France [January 1917], and was invalided home after being badly burnt, returning to the Front [July 1917].

He was awarded the Military Medal [October 1917] for


gallantry and devotion to duty on the 9th of October at Poelcappelle
 

He was Acting Company Sergeant-Major when he was struck by a machine gun bullet and died instantly [26th August 1918].

His photograph appears with a report of his story in the Halifax Courier [2nd February 1918].

He was buried at Warlencourt British Cemetery, France [Grave Ref 30].

He is remembered on the Roll of Honour at Salem Wesleyan Chapel, Hebden Bridge.

In 1639, he went to Oxford University.

He fought on the Royalist side in the Civil War and took the command of Captain of a Troop of Horse under the Earl of Newcastle and his uncle, Sir Marmaduke Langdale.

He laid down his arms in December 1644.

In 1646, he had to pay £878 decimation. The fine meant that he had to sell the family estates at High Sunderland and Coley Hall.

He owned land and property in Northowram, Hipperholme, Shelf and Wyke, and elsewhere in Yorkshire at Ackton, Featherstone, Oustropp, Estrington, Hive, Cave and Ricall.

About 1643 (or 1655), he married (1) Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Thornhill.
