On 14th May 1867, Michael Costello of Bradford, who was up for
drill with the 6th West Yorkshire Regiment of Militia at Halifax,
was charged with a violent assault upon Stead.
Some of Stead's teeth had been knocked loose.
Costello had also threatened to use his bayonet.
Costello was sentenced to 2 months' imprisonment
