During World War I, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 19th Battalion London Regiment.

He died 18th May 1917 (aged 34).


He was talking to his commanding officer when he was struck by a machine gun bullet, and died instantly

He was a spinner of Warley [1827] / a woollen spinner [1841] / a woollen manufacturer employing 20 hands [1851] / a woollen manufacturer of Sowerby Bridge [1854] / a woollen manufacturer of Warley [1855] / a woollen manufacturer employing 36 hands [1861] / a woollen manufacturer at Greenup's Mill, Warley (when the mill was gutted by fire)  [17th May 1867] / a woollen manufacturer [1871].

He married (1) Mary [1798-18??].

He was a clerk at oil cloth factory [1871], a tarpauling manufacturer [1875, 1891], an oil cloth manufacturer [1881, 1891, 1901, 1911], Chairman of the Sowerby Bridge Local Board [1887-1888], a County Councillor in the West Riding [1896], a member of Sowerby Bridge Urban District Council [1896, 1897, 1898,  1899, 1900, 1901], a member of Sowerby Bridge Public Library Committee [1897, 1898,  1899, 1900], president of the Sowerby Division Liberal Association [1896, 1906], a member of the executive council of the Sowerby Division Liberal  Association [1903], vice-president of the Sowerby Division Liberal Association [1901], vice-president of the Bolton Brow Wesleyan Cricket Club [1896, 1897], and steward of the Sowerby Bridge Wesleyan Circuit [1899]

On 27th March 1896, as Chairman of the Sewage Committee, he cut the first sod at the ceremony to start the Sowerby Bridge Sewage Works.

In [Q1] 1873, he married Susannah Clay [1848-1899] in Halifax.

  • Disinfect
  • Keep children home if their parents are sick

In 1881, he married Sarah Roseline Dyer in Halifax.

He was educated at Halifax Secondary School [until 1906] / a commercial clerk [1911] / employed at Shibden Head Brewery.

He sailed from Liverpool [24th November 1911] aboard the Victorian bound for St John, New Brunswick.

During World War I, he enlisted in Vancouver, Canada [August 1914] and served as a Corporal with the 3rd Field Ambulance Canadian Army Medical Corps.

He was invalided to the UK with heart trouble [July 1916], and served on the staff at the Canadian Convalescent Camp, Woodcote Park, Epsom.

He died of a heart attack in Manor War hospital [11th April 1918] (aged 25).

His photograph appears with reports of his death in the Halifax Courier [20th April & 27th April 1918].

He was buried [15th April 1918] in Cardiff, where his parents lived.

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Christ Church, Pellon, and on the Memorial at Halifax Secondary School
