Of West Vale.

In November 1872, it was recorded that

The Board of Works of the
Halifax Union, having arranged the sewerage of the Poorhouse, Union Street, Halifax, have applied Mr Henry Stott's (West Vale) system of ventilating sewers. The main sewers of the house are connected to the draught of the boiler-fires by earthenware pipes and made air-tight by a simple apparatus made of cast-iron. The draught draws all the sewage-gases to the fires, through which they are passed and taken up the chimney stack. Thus, the sewers are constantly and perfectly cleansed from their poisonous gases, and all parts of the house rendered free from smells

The Bradford Observer [February 1873] reported

... since the adoption of Mr Stott's plans for sewer ventilation at West Vale, there had been a great improvement in the salubrity of the district and the mortality had decreased

On 30th January 1877, he wrote a letter to The Leeds Mercury in which he said

During the last few months, the town of Oldham has been adopting this system and are ... perfectly satisfied with it as one of the best sanitary improvements of the day.

If there is a place in your town that smells worse than any other, I will undertake to clear and sweeten it by this method; and if I fail, I will give £50 to the Infirmary

A newspaper [30th September 1854] reported

The Common Wood Trespass Case

Peter Stott was summoned before the bench by Hartley, the pounder for the township of Hipperholme. The charge originally brought against the defendant was for suffering his ass to trespass in Common Wood, but now he was summoned for releasing the animal, when it had been lawfully seized and taken for the purpose of being impounded.

Hartley deposed that the defendant took the donkey out of his custody when he was taking it to Common Wood pinfold. Mr Holroyde called for the written appointment of the pounder made by Mr Lumb at the Court Leet, but Hartley was unable to produce it. Mr Mitchell said that an officer like Hartley was not called upon to carry with him his written appointment and they might just as reasonably expect a policeman to be provided with such written authority whenever he took a man before the magistrates or county court bailiff.

Mr Holroyde contended by law Hartley was bound to produce what was now required of him, and he should insist upon its production and appeal to Mr Craven, the clerk, as to whether he was right. Colonel Pollard thought there could be no doubt but Hartley was bound to prove his appointment.

Mr Mitchell (to the bench): You are against me then?

Colonel Pollard: Yes

Mr Mitchell: the case must fall – Dismissed
