General Points

West Vale is a district of Halifax below Elland and Greetland.

The origin of the name is uncertain

• It was (possibly) so named because it is in the valley to the west of Elland

• It is said that the area was originally known as Lower Greetland but was renamed for West Vale House.

• In a booklet celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Middle Dean Street United Methodist Chapel [October 1915], Rev John Taylor, speculating on the origin of the name, wrote

  We look in vain for any mention of West Vale in the several histories of Halifax, or in Miss Hamerton's Olde Elland. It is part of the township of Greetland, and took its name a short time ago from a weaving shed built in it by a well-known manufacturer and called by him West Vale Shed. Before this time it was merely a nameless valley which served the useful purpose of connecting Elland with Greetland, Stainland and other ancient and well-known villages

The town developed during the late 19th century.
