Cecil was in an electrical business in Perth / a keen motor cyclist / a fine baritone singer / a member of the Perth Concert Artists / an apiculturist / working in the Eastern Goldfields [1931] / an electrical engineer / a signaller in the Kalgoorlie VDC Company / an honorary lecturer on wireless with the Kalgoorlie militia / a farmer [1919].

He married a daughter of Daniel Baker, a well-known figure in the Australian goldfields.

He died of heart failure [4th January 1944] (aged 62)  and was buried at Kalgoorlie cemetery.

He was involved in the notorious Bad Meat Case, as discussed in the Foldout.

In June 1914, he was driving his dog-cart when it was run into by a heavy motor-waggon and he was thrown to the ground. His health never recovered.

He died of a heart attack [14th July 1914] Probate records show that he left effects valued at £2,541

An article in the Bunbury Herald [Wednesday 9th July 1919] reported that


Mary Hannah died in Blackwood, Western Australia [13th August 1918] (aged 65).

John died in the Government Hospital, Wellington, Western Australia [5th July 1919] (aged 66).

The couple were buried at Boyup Brook Cemetery

He retired and became landlord of the Old Cock, Halifax.

He was a member of the Turk's Head Conservative Club / a member of the Loyal Georgean Society [meetings were held at  Walshaw's house].

On 30th April 1868, there was a fire at a mill in Bailey Hall Road, Halifax – occupied by Thomas Crossley & Sons.

Walshaw (aged 35) went to the scene to assist in the incident, and was walking along the roof of a the black dye-house, when he fell through a sky-light into a dyer's vat full of hot, poisonous chrome dye and drowned.

His body was discovered in the vat around 6:00 am.

He was taken out

in a parboiled state

and conveyed to the T' Cat i' th' Window, Halifax, where the Inquest was held. The Jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

The funeral procession started from the Old Cock for St Thomas's Church, Claremount.

He was buried at St Thomas the Apostle, Claremount

Born in Morley, Leeds.

He was educated at Crossley & Porter School [1911] / connected with St Paul's Church, King Cross / employed by the Halifax Town Clerk.

During World War I, he enlisted with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry [1917] and served as a Lance Corporal / Lewis gunner with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

He was wounded by shellfire somewhere in France; his wounds were dressed, but he died before he could be evacuated [18th April 1918].

His photograph appears with reports of his story in the Halifax Courier [27th April & 4th May 1918].

He is remembered at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 3096], on the Loos Memorial, France [Grave Ref 20-22], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Paul's Church, King Cross, and on the Memorial at Crossley & Porter School, Halifax
