On
30th April 1868,
there was a fire at a mill in Bailey Hall Road, Halifax – occupied
by Thomas Crossley & Sons.
Walshaw (aged 35) went to the scene to assist in the incident,
and was walking along the roof of a the black dye-house, when he fell
through a sky-light into a dyer's vat full of hot,
poisonous chrome dye and drowned.
His body was discovered in the vat around 6:00 am.
He was taken out
and conveyed to the T' Cat i' th' Window, Halifax, where the
Inquest was held.
The Jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
The funeral procession started from the Old Cock for St Thomas's
Church, Claremount.
He was buried at St Thomas the Apostle, Claremount
