During World War I, he enlisted [April 1915] and served as a Private with the 4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

On 27th April 1916, he married Lily Steele [1892-19??] at Halifax Parish Church when he was home on leave at Whitsuntide [1916].

He was summoned to rejoin his regiment the day of the wedding; he never saw his wife again.

He was wounded on the Somme.

He died in No.2 Stationary hospital, Abbeville [22nd August 1916] (aged 22).

The Halifax Courier [2nd September 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France [Grave Ref V H 8]

He is remembered at Stoney Royd Cemetery, and in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance
