On leaving school, he started work as a canal carrier's clerk for William Jackson & Son. In 1891, he was at Skircoat.

Based in Sowerby Bridge, he operated one of the largest private canal carriers in Britain and ran a successful business transporting goods by a fleet of about 50 barges along the Rochdale Canal, the Calder & Hebble Navigation, and other waterways until 1919 when Albert gave up the business.

The company was founded in 1894, when Albert borrowed £500 to buy the business of William Jackson & Son, the firm of

Wood's repair dockyard at Mirfield continued until 1924 when Albert retired.

On 28th July 1888, he married Alice Bedford [1866-1923] at Mirfield.

He was Chancellor of the Exchequer [1846-1852]. In 1853, he accepted the post for the direction of Indian Affairs. In 1855, he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1859, he was appointed Secretary of State for India and President of the Board of Control for India.

In 1866, he was created the first Viscount Halifax of Monk Bretton.

In May 1866, John Crossley presented him with a silver dinner service, costing £1,000 and engraved The Gift of Halifax which had been bought by his former constituents in Halifax.

In 1867, his Private Secretary, Algernon West, wrote a 180-page book describing

He was educated at Holy Trinity School / a member of the Square Church Boys' Brigade / a musician (like other members of his family) / a member of the Territorial Band (at the outbreak of World War I).

He volunteered for active service, and during World War I, and served as a Lance Corporal with the 4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

At Ypres, on Saturday 14th August 1915, the Germans had shelled the trenches heavily from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The battalion were in trenches about a mile to the north-west of Ypres when a shell burst amongst a working party of 6 men who were making dugouts, killing 3 men outright and wounding 3 others.

Due to the narrowness of the trench, it was found necessary to carry the wounded over the top of the trench, over open ground and in full view of the enemy. Around 5:00 pm, when it was almost dark, Company Commander Captain Maynard Percy Andrews volunteered to accompany the rescue team – which included Private John Shelley, Charles, and Private G. Holt - who went to do this.

The enemy spotted them and opened fire.

Captain Andrews was hit by a bullet in the throat and died shortly afterwards.

Shelley, Wood and Holt were recommended for an award for distinguished service.

In 1929, his daughter was elected May Queen of Llandudno. He chartered a train and took 500 people from Brighouse – including the local Boy Scouts, the Brighouse & Rastrick Band – to see the ceremony where she was crowned by David Lloyd George.

On 26th January 1916, he married Gladys Cheetham at St Martin's Church, Brighouse.

During World War I, he enlisted [25th April 1917] and served as a Gunner with the Machine Gun Corps.

He was awarded the Military Medal [1918]


During operations, he acted as a runner between company HQ and a section in the outpost line. His duty forced him constantly to pass through an area heavily shelled and gassed, but he delivered every message promptly and without fail. When urged to take cover, he refused to do so, as this might have delayed him. By his skilful guidance, rations were always delivered to the gun teams, despite difficult country and obscure locations. Private Wood is a fine example of cool courage and unswerving allegiance to duty
 

His photograph appears with a report of his award in the Halifax Courier [14th September 1918].

He survived the War.

In [Q3] 1923, A Lewis H. Wood married Edith Clayon in Halifax.

On 6th September 1858, Ann Marsden [aged 34] and Ellen Robinson [26]

both women of bad character

were charged with robbing him of £99 at Sheffield.

Wood and Joseph Waterhouse, another broker, had gone to an auction at Sheffield. The men separated and Wood bought Marsden a drink whilst he waited for Waterhouse to return. Marsden said she would take Wood to his friend and as they walked, she slung him into an alley where he was attacked by 2 men and a woman. They stole his purse and ran off. The magistrate said that Wood, being drunk, was probably as blind as he was wicked and foolish, and remanded Marsden

In 1842, he was one of a gang of 7 local men who were charged with forging and circulating counterfeit notes & coin, as described in the Foldout.

He was committed for trial to York Castle on a charge of putting off forged Bank of England £5 notes, and forged counterfeit silver.

At the Crown Court [21st March 1842], he was convicted of uttering forged notes and sentenced to 15 years and to be transported.

He was killed instantaneously by a machine-gun which penetrated his head during an attack [27th September 1918] (aged 29).

He was buried at Sauchy-Cauchy Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref A 19].
