He was a member of Rhodes Street Wesleyan Chapel, Halifax & Boys' Brigade / a member and winner of the Gold Medal of the Tradesmen's Harriers / a butcher employed by his father.

He was engaged to Doris of 39 Stannary Street.

During World War I, he enlisted with the 2nd/4th Battalion - the local Chums battalion – of the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) [September 1914], then he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles.

He transferred to the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) and fought in the Dardanelles.

He was hospitalised in Egypt & Malta, and sent to Essex as under age, then to Ireland.

He then transferred to the 2nd Battalion Cameronian (Scottish Rifles).

He was listed as missing from 24th March 1918, and was later found to have been killed by machine gun fire while he was a runner at Voyens near Nesle [24th March 1918] (aged 20).

The Halifax Courier [11th May 1918] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered on the Pozières Memorial, France [Grave Ref 37 & 38], and on the Memorial at Rhodes Street Wesleyan Chapel
