In 1896, the Sowerby Bridge Almanack recorded that beer retailers who wish to sell beer for consumption off the premises, had to buy a licence costing £1 5/- and for consumption on the premises, a licence cost £3 10/-

In 1900, Brighouse was reported to be the most drunken town in the West Riding, with 190 incidents. In 1901, this number rose to 222.
In 1906, there were 47 licensed premises in Sowerby Bridge for a population of 11,437.
Today, the Bull Green area of Halifax is particularly well-supplied with pubs. In 2000, a survey showed that Halifax had one pub per 331 households, more than twice as many pubs as any other town or city in the United Kingdom. At the other end of the scale, Sutton in Surrey had one pub per 17,000 households.
In February 2003, there were 49 pubs in the central Halifax area, as defined by the HX1 postcode. The Police said that they would contest any further applications for new pubs in the area – at least, that's what they said!
About 10% of all the public houses in Calderdale are within the square kilometre which makes up Halifax town centre.
