Robert Eli Marland

Some images of Robert Eli Marland

Robert Eli Marland, his wife Lilly Malinda.
The location was unidentified, but Keith Stansfield writes:

I believe this is on the right side of the road (A646) leaving Luddendenfoot towards Mytholmroyd, and I suggest the photo was taken in the 1890s before Robert Eli Marland took his family to Wrea Green on the road to Lytham where they were at the time of the 1901 and 1911 census.

My clues are as follows:

  • The sun is coming from the left of the picture putting the property on the north side of the road
  • Mr & Mrs Marland married in September quarter 1892 and appear quite young in the photo; possibly their daughter was not yet born (Annie was born in late 1894 and on the 1901 and 1911 census it states she was born in Luddendenfoot)
  • The enumerator's sequence for the 1891 census is: Upper Foot (5 houses), Rockcliffe (1 house), Wood Bank (1 house), Rose Grove (1 house), then behind the mill to Common (3 houses) then on to Luddenden Lane. The Marlands are listed at Rose Grove
  • The 1892-1894 1:2500 map has fields between Rock Cliffe and a few houses at Middle Foot; the one bordering the roadway is possibly Rose Grove, the property in the photo
  • The 1964 1:2500 map shows the first house at Middle Foot to be Woodbank. More detached houses have been built nearer Luddendenfoot at Middle Foot by this time, replacing earlier properties (including Rose Grove?)

A group of men working for Robert Eli Marland. Robert Eli is standing at the back with his arms folded.

The poster on the left shows the name St Mary's, so it may be St Mary's Church, Luddendenfoot
