A Brass Band is a group of musicians playing brass instruments. Drums and other percussion are often included.
The first Brass Band Contest in Halifax took place – with an audience of several thousand – at the Piece Hall on 26th September 1854. Of the 7 contestants, Dewsbury were the winners.
National Brass Band contests began in 1860. Black Dike Mills Band won the first contest and the prize of £40.
