Samuel Smith JP was born in Skircoat, son of Joseph Smith.
He was educated at Kendal Grammar School.
He and his father moved to Bradford about 1834.
He established Samuel Smith & Brothers dye works at Field Head, Horton, one of the largest works of its kind in Bradford.

His portrait, painted by Sir W. Gordon and subscribed by the people of Bradford, was placed in the saloon of St George's Hall.
He was an able musician.
He was an acquaintance of Felix Mendelssohn, the 2 having met whilst Smith was travelling in Europe in 1839.
He had an interest in church organs, and was involved in the construction of the organ at Lightcliffe Congregational Church.
He wrote several works including
