This was the Second Mrs Sunderland and took place in the large hall at the Technical School on 11th April 1890. One of the judges was unable to be present on the Saturday to the whole competition took place on Friday evening between 5:30 and 11:30.
The judges were again Mr John North, Mr J. E. Sykes and Mr D. W. Evans.
34 entries were received – 11 tenors, 11 basses and 12 violinists, of whom 29 contestants appeared
The set piece for the violinists was the andante and finale from Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto for E Minor. Those whom the judges considered best, were then asked to perform their own chosen piece. The names or aliases* of the contestants were:
The prize of 3 guineas was awarded to Mr William Ackroyd
The tenors' set pieces were Deeper and deeper still and Waft her, angels from Jephtha
The winning tenor was Mr Charles Abel Starkey whom the judges considered to have sung with beautiful taste, and his expression had been remarkably good in both the test and selected pieces. He won the Silver Medal and half of the 5 guineas prize. The judges highly commended the singing of Mr W. E. Pearson
The set piece for the basses was Revenge, Timotheus cries from Handel's Alexander's Feast
The winning bass was Harry Villiers* (Mr John Harry Shepley). He won the Silver Medal and half of the 5 guineas prize. The judges highly commended the singing of James Vanburgh*
Mrs Sunderland was unable to be present.
