Many of these were slums and poorer housing from the 19th century,
possibly built by a mill-owner for his workers.
Later offices and administrative buildings were given similar names,
such as Princess Buildings.

The block was built in 1903-1905 as a department store for draper
Alexander Scott Limited and designed by Clement Williams & Sons.
Owners and tenants of the buildings have included
The York Restaurant [1905]
and
The American Crown Tooth Company Limited [1905].
In March 1921, it opened as the headquarters and offices of the
Halifax Permanent Building Society.
The front was altered and the familiar marble pillars added in 1927.
Around 1931, there was considerable extension to the building and the
Alexandra Hall and Café were built.
It is still used as a branch of Halifax PLC, although the
headquarters have moved to the newer building on Trinity Road
