Council Minutes relating to local Smoke and Nuisances

• 16th November 1871: Sanitary Committee – Resolved on the Motion of Councillor Longbottom, Seconded by Councillor Johnson That the Borough Engineer and the Inspector of Nuisances do examine the furnaces at Messrs Edleston's Dyeworks, Cross Hill to ascertain the cause of the smoke nuisance arising from the Chimney of those works

• 21st March 1872: Sanitary Committee – Resolved on the Motion of Councillor Knowles and Seconded by Councillor F. Smith That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Thomas Crossley & Sons drawing their attention to the nuisance arising from their chimney emitting dense smoke

• 30th May 1872: Sanitary Committee – Resolved on the Motion of Councillor Parker and Seconded by the Vice Chairman That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs S. C. Lister & Company, in reference to the smoke nuisance from the chimney of their works in Lower Wade Street

• 11th July 1872: Sanitary Committee – Resolved that the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Mr Edward Ingham of Green Mount Dyeworks and Messrs John Crossley & Sons of Dean Clough Mills in reference to the smoke nuisance from their works

• 8th August 1872: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write Mr John Brown in reference to the complaint of a nuisance from the chimney of his works in Bedford Street

• 5th September 1872: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write Messrs Thomas Crossley & Company of Bailey Hall Dyeworks in reference to the smoke nuisance from their chimney

• 5th September 1872: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Lupton and Charnock to remedy the nuisance existing on their premises at Stone Trough Brewery

• 19th September 1872: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write regarding a fireplace or furnace connected with Mr John Brown's workshop in Bedford Street, and there used in the working of a steam engine, which does not as far as practicable consume the smoke arising from the combustible used in such fireplace or furnace

• 19th September 1872: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Mr Richard Edmondson in reference to the smoke nuisance from the chimney of his brewhouse adjoining the West Hill Tavern Hanson Lane

• 17th August 1880: Sanitary Committee – That Notice be served upon Mr Thomas Hoyle, requiring him to abate the Nuisance caused by the emission of black smoke from the chimney of his works in Green Lane

• 31st August 1880: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the following in reference to Smoke Nuisances at their works: Messrs Hollingrake and Clegg, Miall Street Messrs Bowman Brothers, Pellon Lane John Crossley of Lee Bridge

• 28th September 1880: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at Albion Mills That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Mr W. H. G. Horsfall in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at his works in Lower Wade Street

• 12th October 1880: Sanitary Committee – That a Notice be served upon Mr Samuel Whiteley requiring the abatement of the Smoke Nuisance at his works in Hanson Lane

• 23rd November 1880: Sanitary Committee – That notice be served upon Messrs Bowman Brothers requiring the abatement of the Smoke Nuisance at their Works in Pellon Lane That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Pickles & Company of Bottoms, Salterhebble Messrs Balme and Pritchard of Lister Lane in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their respective works

• 7th December 1880: Sanitary Committee – That notice be served upon Messrs Kirk, requiring the abatement of the Smoke Nuisance at their works in Old Lane and Lee Bank

• February 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their works at Haley Hill

• 15th March 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be instructed to take the necessary proceeding under the Public Health Act 1875 for the removal of the following Nuisances A certain Chimney situate at or near Old Lane, also a certain other Chimney situate at Lee Bank connected with the works of Messrs Joseph Moxon Kirk and Arthur William Kirk sending forth black smoke in such quantities as to be a nuisance. A Chimney situate at or near Lee Bridge, connected with the works of Mr John Crossley, Dyer, sending forth black smoke in such a quantity as to be a nuisance

• 9th June 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Walshaw and Hanson, of Bowling Dyke Messrs J. W. & C. Ward of Range Bank Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited of Haley Hill With reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their respective works

• 21st June 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs J. W. Ward & Sons in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their Works in Walnut Street

• 2nd August 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Ambler Pullan in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at his Works in Back That Notice be served upon Mr George Frederick Smeeton requiring the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the chimney of his works at Caddy Field

• 16th August 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs W & D. Horsfall in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their Works in Lower Wade Street

• 30th August 1881: Sanitary Committee – That notice be served upon Messrs Balme and Pritchard, requiring the abatement of the Smoke Nuisance at their Works in Lister Lane

• 13th September 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take the necessary proceedings under the Public Health Act 1875 for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from a certain chimney (No. 2), situate at Old Lane, connected with the works of Messrs Joseph Moxon Kirk and Arthur William Kirk

• 13th September 1881: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take the necessary proceedings under the Public Health Act 1875 for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from a certain chimney (No. 1), situate at Old Lane, connected with the works of Messrs Joseph Moxon Kirk and Arthur William Kirk That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Calvert Brothers in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their works at Ladyship

• 11th October 1881: Sanitary Committee – That notice be served upon Messrs Lord & Son, requiring the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of smoke from (No. 2) Chimney of their works, situate in Water Lane. That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited, Albion Mill Messrs Tillotson & Company Atlas Works In reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their respective works

• 31st January 1882: Improvement Committee – New Plans include John Crossley & Sons – Six Goux Closets – Crib Lane

• 28th February 1882: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Balme and Pritchard in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their works in Lister Lane

• 25th April 1882: Sanitary Committee – That a notice be served upon Messrs Joseph Moxon Kirk and Arthur William Kirk, requiring the abatement of the nuisance caused by the discharge of dense smoke from the No. 1 Chimney of their works in Old Lane

• 16th May 1882: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings under the Public Health Act 1875, for the abatement of a Nuisance at Blackwall, arising from defective drainage on property belonging to Messrs Henry Charles McCrea and William Alexander, or one of them

• 20th May 1882: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings against Messrs John Crossley & Son Limited, for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the chimney of their works called Albion Mills.

  That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Jonathan Smith & Sons in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their works in Cripplegate.

  That in the opinion of this Committee it is desirable that the bed of the Hebble Brook, between Water Lane Bridge and Albion Mills, be paved, and that the attention of the Board of Works Committee be drawn to the matter. This was approved at the Board of Works Committee on 6th July 1882

• 4th July 1882: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings against the Executors of the late Mr Henry Ambler, for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the chimney of their works in Hare Street

• 26th September 1882: Sanitary Committee – That a Notice be served upon the Stoker to Messrs Balme and Pritchard in requiring the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the chimney of their works situate in Lister Lane

• 10th October 1882: Sanitary Committee – That a Notice be served upon Mr William Henry Dodgson Horsfall requiring the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of Black Smoke from the chimney of his works in Winding Road and Lower Wade Street

• 5th December 1882: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Pickles & Company in reference to the Smoke nuisance at their works at Bottoms Mill

• 27th March 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Mr Thomas James Walker in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at his premises in George Street

• 15th March 1883: Board of Works Committee – That tenders be invited for the construction of a Sewer from the Manhole in Crib Lane to the Hebble Brook, and also for the construction of a Storm Outlet in Foundry Street in accordance with the Plans now submitted by the Borough Engineer

• 24th April 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Walsh and Brierley, Pellon Lane, and also to Messrs J. W. Ward & Sons of West End in reference to Smoke Nuisance at their works

• 12th April 1883: Board of Works Committee – That the Tender of Messrs David Brook and Son for the construction of a Sewer from Crib Lane to the Hebble Brook for the sum of £599 4/3d be accepted

• 5th June 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings against Willie Law of 3 Whitebirch Terrace, Wheatley : Crossley Barker of 24, Rose Terrace : John Hey of McKnight's Buildings all Stokers employed by Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited, for the abatement of a Nuisance caused by black smoke issuing from the Chimney in connection with C Mill and New Shed belonging to the said John Crossley & Sons Limited situate at Dean Clough. That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings against Charles Kay, the Stoker employed at the works of Messrs J. W. & C. Ward, for the abatement of a Nuisance caused by Black Smoke issuing from the Chimney in connection with the Works of the said Messrs J. W. & C. Ward, at Range Bank

• 3rd July 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings under the Public Health Act 1875 for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the chimney in connection with the works of Mr Joseph Lightowler, situate at Claremount

• 17th July 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings against Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited, for disobeying an Order of Justice dated 1st September 1882, requiring the abatement of a nuisance caused by black smoke being discharged from the chimney of their works at Navigation Road

• 31st July 1883: Sanitary Committee – The Town Clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Bowman Bros of Pellon Lane Messrs Eggleston, of Savile Road In reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their Works

• 14th August 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Town Clerk be instructed to write Messrs Pickles & Company of Bottoms Mill in reference to the Smoke Nuisance at their works

• 28th August 1883: Sanitary Committee – That Notice be served upon Messrs Calvert Brothers requiring the abatement of the Smoke Nuisance at their Works at Ladyship

• 11th September 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings under the Public Health Act 1875, for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the Soap Works situate at Iona Street, in the occupation of Mr Thomas Whitley

• 25th September 1883: Sanitary Committee – That Notice be served upon Joseph Cordingley, Stoker employed by the Ellen Royd Brick & Tile Company Limited, requiring the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the Chimney in connection with the Works of the said Company situate at Range Bank

• 9th October 1883: Sanitary Committee – That the Inspector of Nuisances be and is hereby instructed to take proceedings under the Public Health Act 1875, against Messrs Joseph Brook and William Brook for the abatement of a Nuisance arising from the discharge of black smoke from the Chimney in connection with their Works at Lee Bridge
