Charles Horner



Charles Horner, the Halifax jeweller, was born in Ovenden [18th November 1837], the son of Stephen Horner.

He was a watchmaker's apprentice [1851] / a watchmaker employing 2 men [1861].

In the late 1850s, he started a jewellery and watch-making business – Charles Horner Limited – in Hebden Bridge. Around 1858, Josiah Wade went to work for Horner

Around 1875, he moved his business to premises on the corner of Northgate / Crossley Street, Halifax.

In [Q1] 1865, he married (1) Sarah Dobson [1839-1879].


Sarah was the daughter of James Dobson
 

Children: Several including

  1. James
  2. Florence Mary [1869-1943] who married John Ambler
  3. Harry
  4. George Mitchell
  5. Frederick Stephen
  6. Francis Marriner

The children were born in Halifax.

Sarah died in 1879 (aged 40).

In 1881, Charles married (2) Betsy Greenwood.


Betsy was his cousin

  1. Elizabeth Greenwood [b 1881]
  2. Horace Malcolm

He died of heart disease at The Poplars [26th October 1896].

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £17,085 15/4d.

Probate was granted to his widow Betsy, his sons James & Harry, and his nephew Charles William Leach.

After his death, his sons James & Harry carried on the business, in partnership with his nephew Charles William Leach.

In 1905, the production was moved to a new factory at Mile Cross, and the retail business was discontinued.

He and other members of the family were buried in the family plot at Brighouse Cemetery [E U 658]
