Daniel Oates was the father of the Norwood Green Poet, Charlotte Oates.
In 1846, he married Mary Ingham of Elland.
Children:
In 1856, they lived in Halifax. In 1858, the family moved to Waterhouse Farm, Lower Shelf. In 1865, they moved to Horseclose. The family made annual trips to the coast, usually Blackpool.
He worked in the finishing department at Armitage's dye works in Bradford for over 25 years. In 1875, he retired on account of cancer which necessitated amputation of his right hand.
Daniel played the violin, flute and piano, and taught Charlotte to play the piano.
The family did not attend church or Sunday school, as Daniel wanted his family with him on Sundays. The children were self-educated and did not attend school because of its distance from their home. His son, Arthur, said that Daniel believed that more evil than good was learned at school and Sunday school.
Daniel and his wife objected to either of their children marrying, wishing them
to live for each other alone
although they later saw the error of their ways. Nevertheless, the children had happy lives
