General Notes

St Michael's & All Angels' Church, Shelf is a Million Pound Church designed by Mallinson & Healey.

Built for the new Parish of Shelf.

It was erected and endowed by John Hardy Esq of Low Moor Iron Works was also patron of the living.

His son Charles laid the foundation stone for the Church [27th February 1849].

The Church was consecrated on the 14th June 1850 and a school and vicarage were built later.

A small extension was added to form the Church Room [1983].

On 1st April 1994, St Michael & All Angel's, Shelf joined St Aidan's, Buttershaw to become the Parish of Shelf with Buttershaw.

The records for the Church are held at the West Yorkshire Archive Service office in Halifax (Collection BDP82): Baptisms [1850-1989], Banns [1923-1989], Marriages [1850-1979] and Burials [1850-1978].
