Transferred to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry [3rd March 1916]. He went AWOL [17th March 1916] while in training at Newcastle. Caught but escaped again [20th March 1916]. AWOL for five days in total. He went AWOL again for two days [2nd April 1916]. Refused to obey an order [22nd April 1916].
He went to Malta [23rd April 1916] and transferred to the 1st Garrison Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. Fought in barracks and used obscene language [24th June 1916]. Was drunk in barracks and lied to an NCO [16th July 1916]. Struck a comrade and threatened a witness [8th September 1916]. Promoted to Lance Corporal [15th December 1916].
