Attempted Murder of Pickle Bridge Station Master [1864]

The Morpeth Herald [Saturday 19th November 1864] reported

Attempted Murder of a Station Master.

Mr Steele, station master, Pickle Bridge, Norwood Green, near Halifax, was stabbed in a dreadful manner by Noah Wood, a shoemaker of Norwood Green.

Wood had gone to the station for a parcel of leather and on receiving it asked what was to pay on it. Mr Steele said

9d

whereupon Wood replied

I'll give thee 9d

and, taking a knife from his pocket, he stabbed Mr Steele several times in the abdomen, one of the wounds being 6 ins deep.

A porter interfered, otherwise it is thought murder would have been committed. The injured man was transported to Halifax Infirmary.

Steele was at one time a porter at Manchester, and between him and Wood there would appear to be an old grievance.

Steele's recovery is said to be very doubtful
