The death of Tom Dean [1895]



The following newspaper item reports the inquest into the death of Tom Dean


The Brighouse News [Saturday 5th May 1894]


At the Cock & Bottle Hotel, Southowram, the deputy coroner held an enquiry relative to the death of Tom Dean, age 43, engine tenter, of Pit Hill, Marsh Lane, Southowram.

Annie Dean, widow, said her husband had not been well lately suffering from spells of dizziness.

James Schofield, owner of the quarry, said he and the deceased were working together cutting a diamond in a block of stone. Deceased was taking time when all at once he fell sideways to the bottom of the quarry a distance of 13 yards.

Witness went to him but he was dead.

Mary Ann Hartley of Common Lane spoke to laying the deceased out. His head was smashed in and bones broken.

Verdict: Accidentally killed by falling down a quarry
