In November 1880, Wellington Ellis and George Jones were charged with the highway robbery of William Sykes

Highway Robbery

Last Saturday, Wellington Ellis and George Jones, delvers of Barkisland, were charged with highway robbery from the person of William Sykes a farmer of the same place.

On the 25th October the prosecutor set off home from the Northfield Inn, together with the two prisoners.

They had not gone far when Jones attempted to put his hands in the prosecutor's pocket, and then they set upon him, knocked him about a good deal and robbed him of 12/6d.

He called out

Murder

and Ellis said he would kill him if he did not keep quiet.

Prisoners were committed for trial at the Assizes

Wellington Ellis and George Jones were charged with highway robbery.

Verdict: Not Guilty
