John died 29th December 1888 (aged 40).
The Halifax Courier [19th January 1889] announced
Compact Brussels Carpet Manufactory for sale.To be sold, as a going concern, in consequence of the death of the proprietor a compact carpet manufactory situated in Halifax in the county of York and known as the Eastfield Works and for many years carried on by the late Mr John Gardiner.
The plant comprises:
- 6¾ 5-frame Brussels looms by Smith Brothers
- 13¾ 5-frame Brussels looms by J. Crossley & Company
- 1¾ Tapestry Loom by Smith Brothers
Together with completely complete equipped dyeing and sizing plant to suit.
The firm's production have a ready sale and current orders at present in hand will last three months.
There is in close proximity to the works a first class dwelling house with lawn and gardens which has been occupied by the late proprietor.
The business premises and dwelling house will be let at a low rental or could be purchased with the business.

The Halifax Courier [13th April 1889]
Pursuant to an order of the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice made in the matter of the estate of John Gardiner deceased, an action by John Crossley and Sons on behalf of themselves and all other creditors of John Gardiner deceased against Emma Gardiner the widow and executor of John Gardiner late of Eastfield House Claremont Halifax in the County of York, Carpet Manufacturer who died in or about the month of December 1888 are on or before the 13th day of May 1889 to send by post pre-paid to Mr Frederick Walker solicitor aforesaid of the defendant the executrix of the deceased their Christian and Surname and addresses and descriptions the full particulars of their claim, a statement of their accounts and nature of securities (if any) held by them or default thereof they will be peremptorily excluded from the benefits of the said order.Every creditor holding any securities is to produce the same before Mr Justice Kay at his chamber at the Royal Courts of Justice London on the 27th day of May at 12 o'clock at noon being the time appointed for Judication of the claims.
