James Sutcliffe was the son of Robert Sutcliffe.
He was a woolstapler of Newlands, Warley.
He wrote poems for the local newspapers.
In 1845, he had a warehouse in Cheapside, Halifax.
He fathered (at least) 7 illegitimate children by 3 different mothers.
In 1831, he married Susan Birtwhistle [1810-1874].

James maintained a mistress, Martha Cordingley, at a house at East Parade, Heworth Road, York.

James died at Newlands, Warley [28th June 1864].
Probate records show that he left effects valued at £30,000.
The will was proved by the oaths of John Richardson of Halifax (bank cashier), James Ashworth of Halifax (wool buyer), & John Edward Hill of Halifax (attorney at law).
His will left the furniture and all household effects in the house at Heworth Road, East Parade, St Saviour, York to Martha Cordingley, and provided for his several offspring, together with charity bequests for the Halifax Ragged School, the Halifax Infirmary, Albion Street School, Halifax, and the Halifax Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
James was buried in the unconsecrated area of Halifax General Cemetery.
His son, Edwin, was also buried in the unconsecrated area of the Cemetery.
His son, Fred, was buried next to his father in the Cemetery
