The Tyburn at York

The Tyburn was a general name for the gallows where felons were hanged.

The original Tyburn stood near Tyburn Brook, a stream which flowed near what is now Marble Arch in London; the stream is now below ground.

At York, there were several such places:

• A set of gallows at York Castle [opened 1st March 1379, last used August 1801, and removed April 1812]
• A Tyburn without Micklegate Bar [recorded 1573]
• A gallows at St Leonard's, Green Dykes, without Walmgate Bar [recorded 1575]
• A new drop behind the Castle walls [first used 28th August 1802]
• A set of gallows at the York City Gaol, Bishophill [opened in 1807]

Several local felons – including the coiners and Luddites – were executed here. Some of these were
