Albert Maitland Dempster
[1868-19??]

Albert Maitland Dempster, the son of Robert Dempster, was born in Elland.

He was at Boarding School, Blackpool [1881] / an electrician (boarding at 6 Coleridge Street, Halifax, with Albert   Brenard & family) [1891] / elected Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical  Engineers [18th March 1892] / assistant electrician for Blakey, Emmott & Company in Halifax / a signatory to the company registration of Robert Dempster & Sons  [25th August 1892].

In 1895, he appears in Tasmania.

Family stories suggest that he may have been estranged/cut off from the Dempsters?

Question: Does anyone know whether this rift between him and his family is true?

Records show him as a member of the crew on ships between Tasmania and Australia.

On 22nd November 1905, he married Mrs Harriet Glennie in New Zealand.

Harriet Green [1857-1945] had emigrated with her parents and family from Oxfordshire aboard the Wild Deer to New Zealand in 1874. They settled in Queenstown.

On 3rd January 1876, she married James Glennie [1840-1903], who had emigrated around 1865 from Strathdon, Aberdeenshire.

They had 13 children.

James died, leaving Harriet considerable wealth, including a farm of 500 acres at Balfour, Southland, which she sold off.

She moved to Dunedin where she met Albert Maitland Dempster

On 17th October 1907, Albert was held on remand in Auckland Goal, New Zealand, for 5 days on a charge of assault.

In 1909, Harriet, her daughter Connie Glennie, and Albert Maitland made a trip back to the UK. 4 weeks later, Albert returned to Australia on his own.

The marriage fell apart and the couple separated in 1912.

In 1912, he was admitted for 6 months to Australian Lunatic Asylum by authority of Master of Lunacy. A part of the time was spent on probation. He was discharged 12th March 1913.

In 1914, he appears as a draughtsman on the electoral list of the Division of Melbourne Ports.

In 1925, he appears as an engineer on the electoral list of the Commonwealth of Melbourne, State Flemington Subdivision Newmarket.

In 1945, Harriet died almost penniless in New Zealand
