Frederic Hungerford Bowman
[1839-1925]



Frederic Hungerford Bowman FGS, FCS, DSc.

was born in Huddersfield, the son of James Bowman.

He was Partner in Bowman Brothers cotton-spinning business / a master cotton spinner employing 70 men, 5 women, 53 young persons  male, 53 young persons female, 25 boys, 16 girls (total 269) [1871] / 2nd President of the Society of Dyers & Colourists [1886].

He wrote standard works on the structures of cotton and wool fibre.

In the 1880s, he was Adjudicator on Wool for the Colonial & Indian Exhibition in London.

He must have been made bankrupt in 1902; the first & final payment for his bankruptcy was made in 1906

On 10th April 1866, he married (1) Sarah Hodgson at St Michael's Church, Mytholmroyd.


Sarah was the daughter of John Hodgson

Sarah died Q3 1870.

In [Q1] 1872, he married (2) Clara Hurst Eastwood [1844-1894] in Huddersfield


Clara was born in Huddersfield

  2. twins Telford Waterhouse who died 8th August 1874 (aged  10 weeks) 
  3. Ellen Margaret who died 9th August 1874 (aged 10 weeks)   
  4. Ada St Clare [1876-1886]
  5. Annie Gertrude [b 1877]
  6. Constance Lilian [1879-1971]
  7. Francis Clifford [b 1881]

Clara died in Altrincham [Q3 1894] (aged 50).

On 14th November 1917, he married (3) Caroline Holland [1878-19??] in Buxton, Derbyshire.

They lived at

Living with the widowed Frederic [in 1871] was his sister Jane [b 1844], and visitor Frederick Wagstaff [b 1838] (Congregational minister).

The children were buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 2044]
