Robert Dempster
[1829-1913]



Robert Dempster, a Scot from Cupar, Fife was the son of Sarah (née Lawrence) & Robert Dempster.

He was a Freemason / a founding member of West Vale Baptist Church / an engineer and manager of the Elland-cum-Greetland Gas Company  (from 1850).

He was one of the first members of the British Association of Gas Managers and an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.

His consultancy work advising local textile manufacturers on the building and running of their own small gas plants led to the establishment of Dempster's in 1855, specialising in the production of gas retorts and gasholders at their Rosemount Iron Works, Elland.

In 1877, he wrote a 32-line song entitled The Good Old Gas-Light Company.

He was retired by 1881, but continued to buy or build gas works from his retirement home in Penmaenmawr.

Robert Dempster of Penmaenmawr was fined 10s and 6/6d costs, or 14 days hard labour, for failure to have a dog licence

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £37,988 4/2d; [Resworn £37,798].

His Will was proved by Alfred Woodhead and William Henry Rhodes.

The beneficiaries of the Will were his son Albert Maitland Dempster, his sister and his daughters. In a Codicil, he extends his beneficiaries to include his sons Robert and Alexander and grandchildren. His son John and his children are not included in the Will or Codicil
