In the UK, the Census has been carried out every 10 years since 1801.

After 1841, they contained more detail, including the names of everyone in each household.

The census had to be completed on the night of a given date.

The copies of the census returns held by the Public Record Office are identified by a number of the form

RG n / 1234

the number n represents the year that the census was taken, and will be one of


 7 ==> 1841
 8 ==> 1851
 9 ==> 1861
10 ==> 1871
11 ==> 1881
12 ==> 1891
13 ==> 1901

Details

After 1841, they contained more detail, including the names of everyone in each household. The entries were arranged by address, household by household.

  • Number and ages of all living children and step children under  18 years of age (In respect of Married Men, Widowers and Widows) 

  • 1931

    The Census records taken in 1931 were destroyed in World War II

  • 1939

    A population count was carried out in 1939 on the eve of World War II

    is displayed for any individual who is still alive

  • 1941 No census was taken on account of World War II

    Irish census returns only survive from 1901, earlier data having been destroyed
