This document is part of the Eight week Buteyko Course by Sergey Altukhov who will guide you through the Buteyko method via the internet and email.

Dear Patients,

I am beginning this mini e-novel during a difficult time in order to give you the chance of delivery from your terrible sufferings. Why am I beginning it with such difficulty? Because I wrote and published almost 20 years ago everything that sick people need to know about asthma, hypertension, diabetes, women’s problems, angina pectoris, ischemia and so on. The first volume of my trilogy, the documentary novel Dr Buteyko’s Discovery appeared in autumn 1990!

But who of you has read this trilogy? At best, Russians can buy a small blue book, Breathing the Buteyko Way by philosopher Feodor Kolobov. The book is only 100 pages long. In the foreword, the author writes that he is not a practitioner and has not learnt the Method. He simply outlines the philosophy of the Method. Yet nevertheless, patients try to use it to learn the Method, to save money on actual training. At times, they suffer a boomerang effect. This book was published in 2003, the year Konstantin Buteyko died.

The general public hardly knows of my novel of 1990. Dr Buteyko always said, ‘Before anything else, introduce yourself in detail to the patients. Tell them about yourself, otherwise they will not trust you and will not learn the Method properly.’ Today, when I sign my official replies to patients about the Buteyko Method, I write:

Director of the Buteyko Method Training Centre,
Qualified Buteyko practitioner with 20 years’ experience,
Senior Buteyko practitioner and supervisor,
Author of the Dr Buteyko’s Discovery Triology,
Sergey Altukhov.

The most important title in this list is senior practitioner and supervisor. It is like being a General in the Buteyko Movement, and it needed to be earned....

I came to Dr Buteyko in Akademgorodok in Novosibirsk in 1987. Strictly speaking, I came as an administrative assistant to Boris Mitrofanov. In June 1988 I was officially employed by Dr Buteyko in his Novosibirsk Buteyko Breathing Centre. At first I was an ordinary practitioner, then I was appointed as Dr Buteyko’s assistant for media relations and publicity. I am in any case a professional writer. By 1988, I was already the author of three books: I Also Live on the Earth (Novosibirsk, 1986), a story about Siberian guerillas; The Hero of Labour (Novosibirsk, 1987), a story about a hero of socialist labour from the Chkalovsky factory; and The Magic Trade (Novosibirsk, 1988), a story about the Communist Party member Raisa Udalaya, a Hero of Labour.

When I showed these books to Dr Buteyko, he smiled. ‘Yes, you’ve done a lot of work. But who will write an honest book about my Discovery and the Method?’

I told him that I was ready.

‘Then come and work with me. Study the Method and the Discovery thoroughly. Work with groups of real patients. Get good results and qualifications as a practitioner. Then you’ll be able to write…’

I stood behind Konstantin Buteyko’s office window for the first time in June 1988. That was the first time I had seen the living medical genius! Soon I learnt about the beginnings of the great medical discovery, and how it is hidden from sick people.
